Being a Packer fan I saw plenty of stars after the NFC championship game! :'(
March 5, 2015 at 5:32 pm #11943Guys: I can't wait to report on the cool sky stuff I saw on the beach in Mexico last week. Does anyone know about the planetarium show tonight? I tried to get tickets on the Community Ed page but it is no longer posted. Could they be sold out? — John Attewell
March 5, 2015 at 7:01 pm #11944Well, I answered my own question! Community Ed pulled the planetarium from the web site but only because today is the event. I called them and they still have lots of tickets left. Call them at 328-4000.
March 13, 2015 at 2:37 pm #11945Looking at the weather for this weekend — not so good for viewing. Predictions are for 66% cloud cover all weekend 🙁
I hope that it clears up for next weekend's Messier Marathon.
March 13, 2015 at 2:42 pm #11946Hmmm, I was looking at the NOAA report and while Friday night looks like it will be cloudy, Saturday night says "mostly clear". I was planning on Eagle Bluff for Saturday night. Guess I'll play it by ear Saturday, but I'm itching to get some light on the camera sensor. 😉
March 13, 2015 at 7:23 pm #11947Dean was saying both nights are open for us at Eagle Bluff. Tonight looks like the iffier of the 2 nights, with higher humidity and 30-40% cloud cover and higher winds. Saturday night looks much better. As of now.
March 13, 2015 at 7:52 pm #11948Tomorro night looks good to great. Tonight I would recommend "Local Observing Only".
I post later if things change.
March 13, 2015 at 8:45 pm #11949I'll see what it looks like when I get home. Chomping at the bit to get out. If somewhat clear tonight, probably head to Keller tonight and Eagle Bluff tomorrow.
March 13, 2015 at 9:28 pm #11950According to Decorah CSC tonight looks sort of good at sunset, but then things get cloudy kind of early. I think that I will try the Flatin Farm early and then pack it in with the clouds. Tomorrow night at EB for sure. No work on Sunday, so its time to let'r rip if Sat. night stays good.
Eagle Bluff has groups there both nights of March 20/21, but will work with us on the lights. Fri night looks like they'd go off between 8 and 9, Sat. night will be off from dusk on.
March 13, 2015 at 9:47 pm #11951Sounds like a plan. See you'all tomorrow night.
March 13, 2015 at 11:43 pm #11952Doesn't look the worst out there. I think I'll head to Keller for a little bit tonight and see you all at Eagle Bluff tomorrow. Probably leave Keller by 10PM tonight.
March 14, 2015 at 12:26 am #11953I'm heading out to Keller. Anyone want, come on out. I won't stay too long, 10ish or so, because I plan to hit Eagle Bluff tomorrow. See you at Keller tonight and EB tomorrow.
March 14, 2015 at 2:54 am #11954Well, clouds came in. It was pretty much open to the south to start. I thought it looked for awhile like the clouds were pulling north a bit, and the thicker clouds stayed there. But then some lighter clouds started covering most things. There would be hole, but I decided to call it a night anyway. Left around 9:00. Nice while it lasted. Jupiter has 2 pair of moons on the same side, 2 groups of 2, pretty neat. Nice gibbous Venus up quite high. Did a quick run through of some Messiers to the south, 35, 36, 37, 38, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 50, 78, 79, 93. Then cloudy. Hope tomorrow is better, I guess a little cooler, so perhaps less cloudy. til tomorrow…
March 14, 2015 at 3:30 am #11955I too, had a great night. Steve and I set up about 7:30 p.m. and we had a look at Sirius B and Jupiter. He was tired and headed out after an hour. I looked at Jupiter and saw what Jeff did. 2 pairs of 2 moons and it appeared that the inner two were slowly converging.
What was most interesting was Canis Major. I recorded the variable star R Canis Majoris, W Canis Majoris with Ced 90? in the same FOV. I think that is the open clusters designation. It is nice but not a standout Messier. I tried for Thor's Helmet, NGC 2359 but then clouds were making themselves apparent. Oh well.
What a wonderful night. Kind of different to be out there again solo. A person can get more serious observations in. See all who will make the pilgrimage to Eagle Bluff tomorrow night. Very much looking forward to that. It's been nearly 5 months since we have gotten out as a group.
God Bless America and all of you in the RAC.
March 14, 2015 at 11:07 pm #11956See you all at Eagle Bluff tonight. Looks like it should be pretty good out there tonight.
