It’s looking good for Wednesday night. I’m thinking about taking Thursday morning off so I can stay up late and observe.
Anybody care to join me at Root River Park… or somewhere else?
Duane
PS. I posted this in the old observing thread as well. I thought it was time to start a new observing thread.
August 28, 2024 at 9:47 am #14947Anybody observing anywhere on Friday? It looks like it’s going to be “Glorious!”
August 28, 2024 at 4:25 pm #14948Duane, were you still going to Root River tonight, Wednesday? I was thinking of heading out there.
I don’t know where to go, but would perhaps be interested in Friday as well.
August 28, 2024 at 7:13 pm #14949I do. Waiting for dinner to be done right now. I should maybe pack up there car though… it would save some time later. 🙂

It was a “Glorious Night for Astronomy”
10 biases, 20 darks, 17 x 121 second subs. Stretched for balance then heavily processed to reduce skyglow/light pollution, mostly near the horizon. One horizon line was removed and one burned to black on the edge.

August 30, 2024 at 4:04 pm #14952Yes, indeed, it was a “Glorious Night for Astronomy” resulting to your great picture of the Milky Way. I planning be at Root River park today Fri 9/31, but just got call we’ll have a visitors. Maybe later at night. Light should be still off.
August 30, 2024 at 6:01 pm #14954I’m contemplating coming out tonight. How late do you figure, Joseph?
August 30, 2024 at 7:27 pm #14955I plan to head out there and I think Duane will be there as well, at least he was planning on coming out a couple of days ago.
September 27, 2024 at 3:18 pm #14984I just talked to Eagle Bluff. Even though it’s very late notice, the parking lot is available to us tonight and tomorrow night! I’m not positive yet if I’ll make it down. If by chance the staff didn’t get the lights turned off, go to the entrance to the dorm building (where the bathrooms are) and there should be a way to contact the staff. I have the bathroom code that is valid for tonight and tomorrow night. I don’t want to post it here, so text or call me at 507-251-5927 if you want it.
New moon is next Wednesday, so the following is also a dark sky weekend. Tentatively EB should be available Friday and Saturday that weekend as well, but EB will confirm next week.
September 27, 2024 at 3:26 pm #14985I have a code to enter the building and I plan to attend tonight Friday 9/27.
September 27, 2024 at 4:13 pm #14986I just noticed that clear dark sky has it turning cloudy tonight… but tomorrow looks totally clear. Do you think we should move it to tomorrow?
I hate to drive all the way there and get clouded out.
September 27, 2024 at 4:15 pm #14987Thank you Astromom for checking! It’s always good to have a mom around. 😁
September 27, 2024 at 5:06 pm #14989The way I left it with EB, they will be prepared for us to be there either or both Friday or Saturday night.
It does look like possibly some clouds moving in later tonight, but right now looking clear tomorrow night. So maybe holding out for Saturday night makes sense.
September 27, 2024 at 7:59 pm #14990It did get better for tonight, but I’m thinking tomorrow looks better. I don’t think I can swing both.
September 28, 2024 at 12:03 am #14991It was a glorious night for astronomy at Eagle Bluff, how Dean used to say. What a night. There was a Chinese space station -0.7 mag, then ISS -3.4 mag. Low clouds above the South horizon dissolved, and we could see Sagittarius very well. Several random meteors. Very attentive, curious and actually knowledgeable audience, 30 maybe even 40 people. Great questions and discussion.
