Friday is looking decent before until 1AM. I’m going to be at a retreat (bringing my scope to show a bunch of kids Jupiter) so I won’t be around. But, I wanted to give a heads up that I think the first half of Friday night will be a glorious (half) night for astronomy!cleardarksky

It will also be about 8° out there. If you go out, keep warm!

Attached is PDF of the slide show we reviewed at the Feb 2025 club meeting. It contains items from Dean Johnson’s equipment. Email, text, reply in forum, or call me if you may be interested in any of the items. I can then round up the items and bring them into the meeting to assess. Prices listed would be considered maximum and I’m sure Dean’s…[Read more]

Sounds good to me, I’ll plan to be there.  It is time we have a Dean Johnson Memorial Messier Marathon.

The parking lot is available both Friday and Saturday (January 31st, 2025) at Eagle Bluff.

I may or may not attend. Sky-wise, tonight looks okay, Thursday looks even better except for some wisps around midnight—then the transparency gets bad Friday evening and eventually clouds start to roll in around 2-3AM. Saturday looks like a wash t…[Read more]

I reached out to Eagle Bluff, but I just found out our contact is out of the office. I’m awaiting a response after leaving a message.

It is the New Moon this Friday. I’m not sure I can make it. Cloud-wise is also iffy. Currently it says clear all day Friday with clouds rolling in by 3AM on Saturday and transparency not good after 3PM on Friday. I…[Read more]

That’s great that it was fought on their security camera. If it had been several feet into the grass, I wonder if it would have been noticed!

Who all is up for a Messier Marathon on March 28th or 29th? If the sky is clear, and Eagle Bluff is available… I would like to get it on the calendar.

If Eagle Bluff isn’t available, is there another location that would work? We’d need some pretty good horizons.

On close inspection of the above mentioned cell phone pics they are of the C/2023 A3 comet and NOT C/2024 G3. (Bummer!)

I was out in and north of Root River Park and had a good view of the setting sun.  I observed for an hour but was unable to see the comet with the naked eye or with my 10×50 binoculars however I did capture a cell phone image of it (I just looked now at the images!).  I’ll put them in the next post.

Today January 14 I observed comet C/2024 G3 ATLAS after sunset. I was observing over the KR7 reservoir, alternately photographing and observing with the binocular 10×50. Around 5:25pm I suddenly saw the comet in the reds low over the horizon in my 10×50. It had a bright nucleus and a distinct tail. I observed it for about 10 seconds. Then I looked…[Read more]

Sungrazing Comet ATLAS (C/2024 G3) has just entered the field of view of SOHO’s C3 coronagraph (see image below).  Should be great viewing of the comet’s fiery passage near the sun.

Monday or Tuesday 1/13 and 1/14 could be sunny and comet C/2024 G3 could be visible on day sky. On Monday above Sun, so Sun could be blocked by roof,  on Tuesday comet will be on the left side of the Sun, so Sun could be blocked by the vertical wall on the right side.

Petr Horálek in Europe was able to take a picture of the comet C/2024 G3 ATLAS. Not only that, he saw this comet with the naked eye. Let’s hope for good weather, we should be able to see it as well.
