I'm going to River tonight. Never been there before. I'm going to see if I can finally dial in Pluto. Hope light pollution is not too much.
I've been out of touch for a while. Is there a date and location set for the Star-B-Q ?
Any one going to Eagle Bluff this weekend??
Randy … is RAC going to set up anywhere in Rochester tomorrow? I can bring my 12" Dob if I know where. Or call me at 507-210-6753.
Randy … where is the RAC going to set up in Rochester? I'm able to bring my 12" Dob if I know where to go.
Thanks Randy

I was there at 5:45 waiting for the parking lot to clear out of parents waiting in there cars for students with their headlights on. Along with the parking lot lights it wasn't going to work to be set up next to the building or somewhere in the parking lot. I thought if I set up to the east in the grass field to the east no one would find me, so I decided to leave. The sky wasn't the best as there was thin clouds.Rick
Can someone tell me when and where the next meeting is please?

Depending on the weather I'll be there Thursday by 6:pm
Rick
Well, that's what happens when you retire…you loose tack of what day it is. Quite embarrassing. If it's not cloudy tomorrow night I'll show up.

I went to Mayo last night 6:30 until almost 8:pm. There was a football game that people were coming in for. I had about 40 people, about half adults, taking a look at he only target available, a first quarter moon, because of the thin cloud cover. Actually it turned out to be pretty good. I stayed until almost 8:pm thinking I would catch some of the people coming out of the planetarium, but that didn't happen. Not sure what the program was there. Had fun anyway.

I can make it this evening. At this time it's unclear what other dates I can make.Rick Murray
I have been out of commision for the last 6 weeks with a total hip replacement. How ever, it's been so cloudy I don't think I've missed much. As I was recooping in my recliner last night, just after sunset, I noticed an especially bright star just above the horizon in the SW sky. I knew it couldn't be a star because it was so bright….Venus (the evening star)….cool!!
A few minutes later I noticed another less bright object about 2 degrees SW of Venus. Because it wasn't yet dark enough for actual stars to be seen yet I wondered what planet it was. So I went to a current star map to see that it was Mercury….way cool!! It's been years since I actually put eyes on Mercury, and not for lack of trying. I was amazed to see it so far in it's orbit away from the sun and so close to Venus that it could be so easily seen. As I am unable to set up my 12" dob I had to be content with binocular viewing. Then I moved N-NW to view Mars. Then I waited about three more hours and found comet Lov-Joy west of Orion. Not much to brag about with binoculars. Just a blue-green orb and not much of a tail. AGNFSGHope to see you all at the next meeting.

After searching in the western sky for two nights I finally found PanStarr in the west-northwest sky at about 1-1/2 binocular FOV above horizon at about 8:25pm. It only took me 25 minutes ::). It was quite faint viewing by just standing with binoculars. Once I steadied myself I was able to make out the brighter core. It has a short, but discernible tail…worth the time to take a look while it lasts.

RickSaturday night, at about 9:pm, I thought maybe my time on this planet might be finished as I was looking at the evening sky just above the horizon to the south east. I was looking at the city of lights. There were streams of light extending 15 to 20 degrees above the horizon exactly above the hallow of Rochester…and only above Rochester. After observing for several minutes I was sure that it wasn't a man made apparition. As I went to the dark side of my deck I could make out just a few very faint streaks of light through very thin clouds rising about 30 degrees in the north east………..My time here is not yet over. This event lasted about a half hour.
Happy Trails
