RandyThis morning I went to the Soccer fields, situation is the same like last year, no through traffic, but it?s possible to go to the parking.
Parking is empty, plenty of space for scopes on Saturday May 6 at 9 PM.Bob, we have two events going. Jeff Newland and I will be at the Gloria Dei Church for sure. They have asked us to set up in the SW parking lot (at the intersection of 12th St NW and 12th Ave NW. Weather looks great!

Randy, Jeff and I had a nice crowd (50-55 people or so) at the Gloria Dei Church parking lot observing event. Jupiter and the moon were the main objects of interest. A mom on an evening walk in her neighborhood stopped by and mentioned her son Nick (?age 14 or so) would be excited to join in. Mom called Nick and he came right over with his new DOB and Randy and Jeff help him collimate his scope. Soon Nick was showing other guests his scope and it was clear he was a talented youngster with a keen interest in science (solar astrophysics in particular). We enjoyed the views of Jupiter and moon and we were fortunate enough to have relatively clear skies (some unexpected clouds did show up initially) and a view of the bands, moons and Red Spot of Jupiter and moon craters. I talked with Dr. Roger Harms and his wife and learned of their donation of our club scope "Elvis" now stationed at Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center (too bad we didn't get it set up for the NCRAL!). It was great to hear the exclamations of the guests when viewing Jupiter, many for the first time, through a telescope!
Some planetary observations from 5/11 and 5/12. Fairly nice skies for viewing the brightest objects. Jupiter was imaged about 30 minutes following the double moon shadow transit, with IO's shadow still visible as was the Red Spot. Saturn was imaged this am at about 4:30 am and Venus around 5:30 am. All are short 20-30 ms (?) exposures with the Orion 5MP camera. Still quite a bit of atmospheric distortion present but who can complain about the weather in the last 2 days!

I see on the RAC calendar that this coming Friday and Saturday nights are possibilities for dark sky observing. Does anyone have an idea yet if either of those nights have a chance of happening?

Mike C:\Thanks Mike. I have been to that tributary of the Zumbro just a bit further south on CR 15 many times and thought it was a pretty good dark sky site. Here's an old photo of my son Bryan and myself with a smallmouth caught during a rain storm from that little tributary!
