Can anyone recommend a good app for my Samsung tablet? I've been using Google sky map on my android phone, but would like something a bit more advanced for the larger screen.
Thanks in advance!August 5, 2014 at 10:59 pm #11838Looks like the ISS has now switched so that it is visible again in the evening here in Rochester. You can see it 2 or 3 times an evening.
Here's a link:

[/quote]SkySafari just came out with its android version update earlier this year: http://www.southernstars.com/products/skysafari_android/skysafari_pro.html
I got the iOS Pro version for my iPad and phone a couple years ago and it truly can run both of my scopes.
To be honest, there is no other planetarium app on the market that comes anywhere close to the features and depth of catalogs in this software.
Three versions to choose from. Since it's new to the android platform, I'm not sure if it's buggy or not, but has operated extremely stable for me.
You can check out more on their yahoo group. I can show you more in person anytime.Randy
August 7, 2014 at 2:29 am #11840Thanks for the info, Randy! I will have a look at Skysafari.
Jeff, looks like we may have to wait a few nights to get a clear sky for ISS gazing…August 10, 2014 at 6:51 pm #11841my buddy said his club got a discount on SkySafari by ordering through the
club a few years ago? that might be something worth looking into…August 11, 2014 at 1:15 pm #11842Randy, after hours of tech "help" from Google, Samsung, and Skysafari, let me confirm that it is VERY buggy. It simply will not work on my Samsung Tab4 tablet. I'm bummed because Google Skymap falls woefully short in comparison… π
August 11, 2014 at 11:10 pm #11843Sorry to hear about the trouble with the high tech stuff, but, "ahem", has anyone taken a look at tomorrow night's CSC?
Blue to dark blue boxes all the way, astronomy fans and I think it is time old Dean-o got out there during the week to 1. check out the Flatin Farm and 2. enjoy some dark summer sky until Moonrise thrills me with a fitting end to an August night.
AGNFA!
August 13, 2014 at 4:51 pm #11844I decided to check out the Perseids last night. I sat in my backyard from about 10:30 to midnight. I saw a couple right away at 10:30. The ISS went by at 10:33 and saw number 3 at that time in the direction of the ISS. Probably wouldn't have seen that one if I wouldn't have been watching the ISS, low in the NW in the soup. Seems like I had 6 meteors by 10:45… but only 4 after that. 10 total meteors, I think 9 Perseids and 1 other one. Number 7, at 10:58, headed to the NW through the handle of the Big Dipper, probably not a Perseid. Number 8 at 11:18, 9 at 11:34, and 10 and 11:44.
The backyard wasn't too bad. It is west of the house, so it was in the shade and house blocked the moon. And, it was shade. The houses behind us were really lit up by the moon. Things were pretty bright. π
So, 10 meteors total, not that bad, not that good. π
August 13, 2014 at 5:04 pm #11845I'm thinking of perhaps heading to Keller on Friday or Saturday, weather permitting. Anyone else interested? Possibly short nights, depending on how long you want to be in the moonlight. Moonrise at 11:03 on Friday and 11:41 on Saturday.
ISS flyovers at 21:42 (from NW to NNE) and 23:19 (very short, might miss if we blink) on Friday and 20:43 (NW to NNE) and 22:30 (WNW to NW) on Saturday.
Sunset is at 8:14 and 8:13, so setting earlier and earlier.
Also, looking for Eagle Bluff on 8/22 or 8/23, unless Dean moves the Star BQ to that weekend. ;D
August 16, 2014 at 10:38 pm #11846Huh, wake up from my nap and all sort of clear out there. What's going on? Will it stay this way? Time for Keller tonight anyone? What you all think?
August 16, 2014 at 10:42 pm #11847Or perhaps not as much clear as I thought. Plenty to the west, but cloudy to the east. What you all think.
August 17, 2014 at 12:42 am #11848Hmm, right now it doesn't look too bad. A few less clouds to the east, not many to the west, but some bubbling in the south. We'll be heading out to Keller tonight and see what develops. π
August 17, 2014 at 1:07 am #11849We're heading out. No telling how long we'll be there. π
August 17, 2014 at 2:25 am #11850So much for that, not that bad starting out… But… it kept getting cloudier and cloudier on the way down there and while we were there.. so headed home. Then we get home and there is a clear area to the SW. Could see Saturn, Mars, and Arcturus. Hmm, been like that at Keller and might have stayed for a bit, or at least got out the scope and checked out Saturn. But, that's it for tonight. π
August 19, 2014 at 8:37 pm #11851Looks like it might be clear this evening. Anyone for a short observing session at Keller?
