M 101 (Pinwheel Galaxy) taken last night, 2-1-2024 is blink compared with an image taken in May 2023 to see change in supernova of 2023. While still visible is has attenuated quite a bit. Last night’s image was taken with the AT80ED scope with ZWO M183C camera, live stacking 1147 5 second frames.

Gang: There is a StarLink train tonight starting at 5:25 pm. There will be about two dozen satellites at magnitude 2.7. They will start in the west at 10 degrees altitude, pass overhead at 69 degrees altitude, and end in the east-southeast about 17 degrees. The last satellite will disappear about 5:46 pm. Clear skies!

Wow. I was taught that Earth’s rotation was slowly slowing as the tides transferred its spin angular momentum to the Moon’s orbital angular momentum. This suggests that Earth’s mass distribution has contracted a bit.

A tale of two Messiers: M 97 also known as the Owl Nebula and M 108 a starburst galaxy also known as the Surfboard galaxy are within a degree of each other in Ursa Major. The image was taken with the AT80ED refractor and ZWO 183MC camera on 12/7 at midnight (or so). I used Stellarium as a source for the star labels.

So, over in my “Astronomical Events 2022?” topic, I had suggested that links to sights with astronomical events be included in the information. As I went back to that tab, and browsed around, logged in, updated my world clock, … I stumbled upon this interesting article:…[Read more]

So, I obviously don’t consult the website all that often. Who created that “Astronomical Events” link/tab/menu item? I was hoping to see what I missed this year, what I might yet catch, and what was up for 2024. Apparently, that has not been updated since 2022. Can we get a new one created for 2024? 🙂
Perhaps some links to websites that might…[Read more]

Must say I am obsessed with the galaxy M33 in Triangulum especially the structural detail one can obtain using a small refractor (AT80mmED) and live stacking images taken with a modest astronomy camera (ASI ZWO183MC) and an accurate, polar aligned tracking mount (Sky Watcher Star Adventurer Gti). In the image below (a live-stack of 501, 5 second…[Read more]
