Joseph, which ZWO can are you thinking about getting?
I’m saving up for a a rig myself. It’ll be awhile before I take the plunge. Saving is going slower than expected.
June 30, 2024 at 10:45 am #14819Good night at Root River Park 6-29-2024. Excellent turnout of members and visitors and great member/visitor discussions were heard.
I used the Unihedron Sky Quality Meter to record sky darkness. An annotated plot of the data is attached. Max darkness 20.91 mag/arc-sec2.Attachments:
July 1, 2024 at 12:51 am #14824Great, now we have darkness values. I included your data plot into the article Root River Park 2024. Any suggestions for editing are welcome.
July 1, 2024 at 11:50 am #14825Thanks Josef! (BTW, the park is in Olmsted County!)
July 5, 2024 at 5:35 pm #14827Thanks Jeff! It’s great to have for journaling.

July 5, 2024 at 5:39 pm #14828Can’t make the public outreach, but I am planning on hitting Root River to do some observing.
If anybody wants to join me, I’d be happy to have the company.

July 5, 2024 at 6:09 pm #14829What time are you thinking of going out?
July 5, 2024 at 7:13 pm #14830<p style=”text-align: left;”>I’d like to get set up before dark (9:00-ish), but I don’t always get out when I think I will. Regardless, it won’t be long after.</p>
July 7, 2024 at 7:05 pm #14833Here is information regarding the Unihedron Sky Quality Meter readings and correlation to naked eye visual magnitudes. The information is found on page 15 of the instruction manual and this is the link: http://www.unihedron.com/projects/darksky/NELM2BCalc.html
July 7, 2024 at 7:19 pm #14834The above link provides equations to convert magnitude per square second (MPSAS) to naked eye limiting magnitude (NELM) and visa versa. Simply enter the meter reading and click on the ‘calculate’ box. I’ll show this at our meeting Tuesday, 6/9.
July 8, 2024 at 12:16 am #14835Nice. Thanks.
For clarity:
NELM = Naked Eye Limiting Magnitude
MPSAS = Magnitude per square Arc-SecondI think I’ll make a chart using the info on that link and see if I can look at the sky and get the same result.
July 8, 2024 at 6:14 pm #14836Given a clear sky tonight I plan to be at Root River Park to take dark sky readings with and without the Unihedron housing window in place. This is necessary to confirm the estimated 0.15 offset to the reading due to the housing glass window.
August 3, 2024 at 11:26 am #14880Excellent members event at Eagle Bluff last night and early this am.
A zenith dark sky recording is shown belowAttachments:
August 4, 2024 at 4:10 pm #14882Thanks for posting. Looking up it was pretty good. I could see all the stars in the Little Dipper and a lot more within that I normally can’t see. But that was looking most upward. Looking at the northern horizon was hazy (see pic).
Looking east and west, all but the brightest stars disappeared.
Great sky while looking upward, but the lower you looked the more difficult it was to see through the haze.
August 6, 2024 at 5:28 pm #14883Weather forecast for tonight Tue 8/6 looks promising. I plan to go to the Root River park to make sure the light is switched off.
