Petr Horálek in Europe was able to take a picture of the comet C/2024 G3 ATLAS. Not only that, he saw this comet with the naked eye. Let’s hope for good weather, we should be able to see it as well.
January 11, 2025 at 1:33 pm #15258January 11, 2025 at 4:19 pm #15259Sungrazing Comet ATLAS (C/2024 G3) has just entered the field of view of SOHO’s C3 coronagraph (see image below). Should be great viewing of the comet’s fiery passage near the sun.

January 13, 2025 at 11:56 am #15264Comet Atlas g3 still going strong! Below is SOHO C3 animation over the last 2 days
January 14, 2025 at 3:25 pm #15267Maybe 4:45 to 5 pm today we’ll get a chance to see the comet?
January 14, 2025 at 6:15 pm #15268Today January 14 I observed comet C/2024 G3 ATLAS after sunset. I was observing over the KR7 reservoir, alternately photographing and observing with the binocular 10×50. Around 5:25pm I suddenly saw the comet in the reds low over the horizon in my 10×50. It had a bright nucleus and a distinct tail. I observed it for about 10 seconds. Then I looked away and tried to find it again, but I couldn’t. I can’t see it in the pictures either
January 15, 2025 at 1:36 pm #15270I was out in and north of Root River Park and had a good view of the setting sun. I observed for an hour but was unable to see the comet with the naked eye or with my 10×50 binoculars however I did capture a cell phone image of it (I just looked now at the images!). I’ll put them in the next post.
January 15, 2025 at 2:41 pm #15271On close inspection of the above mentioned cell phone pics they are of the C/2023 A3 comet and NOT C/2024 G3. (Bummer!)
January 15, 2025 at 8:45 pm #15272Here is the amazing orbital motion of Comet/2024G3 around the sun as seen by the C3 coronagraph on SOHO
March 6, 2025 at 3:20 pm #15339M35 and NGC 2158 photographed using my 6 inch 150P Quattro scope and ZWO183 MC camera and Sky Watcher HEQ5 Pro mount on Jan 31 2025. 300, 5 second .frames were stacked. M35 is much younger and closer than NGC 2158, but both often appear together in small telescope photos.

March 18, 2025 at 6:12 pm #15352Galaxies are everywhere in the skies during this season (late winter-early spring). Sky and Telescope’s May 2025 issue has some great articles on galaxies and the cover highlights Messier 106. My attempt at imaging M106 appears below. Stellarium views of the sky were used to help identify some of the galaxies present.

April 6, 2025 at 8:48 pm #15361I’m not sure where my post went, so apologies if I’m double posting.
I got my camera, a mirrorless “regular daytime” one, astromodified in late 2024, but did not really get the hang of it until March 2025. If anyone else is interested in getting their camera modified please reply and I’d be happy to go into more detail about my experience. Overall I recommend it, but it’s not for everyone.
April 6, 2025 at 8:52 pm #15362I’m a WordPress newbie, so now I’ll try using attachments to avoid downscaling the images.
Flame to Orion nebulae: 30 * 13s exposures at 200 mm focal length
Rosette Nebula: 31 * 13s exposures at 200 mm focal length
Both processed with Siril and StarNet++.
April 7, 2025 at 1:39 pm #15365Nicely done. I’ve read up on Siril, not familiar with StarNet++.
Keep’em coming! I’d love to see more.
